Hmong New Year's Celebration to Be
Held Nov. 11-12 at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: Nov. 8, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — The Hmong Mutual Assistance Association and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will sponsor a Hmong New Year's celebration Saturday, Nov. 11, and Sunday, Nov. 12, at the McPhee Physical Education Center on UW-Eau Claire's upper campus.

Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to share in the festivities, which will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

"We hope members of the community will attend the event," said Charles Vue, Southeast Asian student services coordinator in the Office of Multicultural Affairs. "This will be an opportunity for them to socialize and learn a lot more about our culture."

Scheduled events include traditional Hmong ball tossing and cultural shows featuring traditional dance performances, folk songs, crafts and food vendors.

The traditional ball tossing, called Pov Pob, is a form of courtship for the youths. If a participant drops the ball he or she must give a "gift" to a partner. Once all possessions have been given away, the participant may sing several songs to get his or her possessions back.

"For the older generations, this is a time to remember they are Hmong through celebrating their heritage, clothing and cultural performance," said Vue. "For the youth, this is a time to value Hmong social gatherings and to see friends and make new ones."

There will be an admission fee of $2 at the door. No alcohol will be sold at this event, and a dress code will be enforced at the door (no torn or baggy jeans, athletic jackets or caps). Hmong participants are encouraged to wear traditional Hmong dress.

For more information, contact the Hmong Mutual Assistance Association at 715-832-8420 or Pao Choua Lee, New Year chairperson, at 715-379-3153.
