Three Organizations Sponsor Discussion
of the Portrayal of Sexual Assault in Film

RELEASED: Nov. 2, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — Three University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire organizations are sponsoring an event to increase awareness of the portrayal of sexual assault in mainstream media.

The Women and Gender Equity Center, College Feminists and the Center for Awareness of Sexual Assault will show film clips from three movies depicting sexual assault and lead a discussion titled "Hollywood's Portrayal of Sexual Assault" at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, in Room 100 of Hibbard Humanities Hall.

The purpose of the viewing is to focus on evaluating the level of eroticism that has been applied to each of the three movie scenes and assess what it says about sexual assault and what messages are being sent to the viewers of such films.

"[Erotic] portrayal in films perpetuates the idea that violence against women is natural and in some cases even desired sexually by women," WAGE staffer Mary Jo Klinker said.

Assistant professor of English Stacy Thompson will facilitate the discussion. He has taught a variety of classes, from a seminar in feminist theory to a course on Marx and Freud. Thompson has published feminist work on the Riot Grrrl Movement, and he is currently working on a project dealing with the disappearance of utopian thinking in the United States.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact WAGE at wage@uwec.edu.
