L. E. Phillips Planetarium Shows to Be Offered This Summer

RELEASED: May 31, 2006

planetarium photoEAU CLAIRE — For the first time in over a decade, public planetarium shows at the L.E. Phillips Planetarium will be offered during the summer on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus. Admission is $2 for the evening shows at 7 p.m. Tuesdays and $1 for the children's shows at 11 a.m. on Saturdays. Following is the schedule for June.

The Tuesday evening show on June 6 features "Stardate: Ancient Horizons," a fast-paced show about Egyptian astronomy thousands of years ago, not recommended for ages under 14. June 13 and 20 will feature "More Than Meets the Eye," which discusses what can be seen in the night sky with the human eye, binoculars or a telescope. June 27 will show "The Stargazer." The voice of Uhura from the original Star Trek series narrates this show about stars, light, gravity and becoming an astronomer. All shows will feature information about the planets that can be seen in the sky this month.

Saturday children's shows are aimed at ages 4-11. The June line-up begins with a classic UW-Eau Claire favorite, "Mr. Genius Tours the Solar System," on June 3 and June 10. A new show, "Lifestyles of the Stars," will premier June 17 and 24. It explores the lives of stars through an "Astrobus Tour of the Stars." For all shows, constellations will be pointed out and the current night sky will be discussed after the multi-media presentation.

For summer programs, tickets will be sold at the door only, just before the show. The planetarium is at the north end of Phillips Science Hall; participants should enter through the Bird Museum. Free parking is available after 6 p.m. and on weekends. Group shows and field trips are available at other times. More information is available at www.uwec.edu/planetarium, or call (715) 836-3148.
