UW-Eau Claire Student Benefits From English Education Scholarship

RELEASED: May 23, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — A junior from Holcombe will receive the first English education scholarship honoring Nan Dougherty, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire professor emerita of English.

English education major Jesse Wetzel is the recipient of the Nan Dougherty English Education Scholarship, which was established by Dougherty, her family and her friends to assist students in their junior year that plan to teach English and have demonstrated financial need.

Dougherty, who taught English at UW-Eau Claire from 1967-88, helped develop the university's English teacher-education program.

One of six children, Dougherty's parents encouraged her to attend college, but could not help her financially. She received no scholarships so she had to work to pay for her education and struggle to find time to study. The experiences made Dougherty appreciate how hard it can be to pay tuition and attend classes.

"Knowing how much scholarships help students, I'm delighted to help students who need financial support," said Dougherty. "I'm just thrilled. I love UW-Eau Claire and its students."

It's appropriate that the scholarship goes to a student planning to teach, said Marty Wood, chair of the English department.

"Nan's legacy is the excellent program we have today," Wood said. "She took our English teacher-education program when it had no director and made it her own. She improved its courses, strengthened the requirements and intervened aggressively in local schools to make sure student-teaching experiences were serious professional experiences for all our future teachers."

While at UW-Eau Claire, Dougherty was president of the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English; wrote a successful national grant; taught workshops for secondary teachers in CESA districts; and taught as a volunteer for summer programs in Poland, Latvia and Russia.

To make a gift to the fund, contact the UW-Eau Claire Foundation at (715) 836-5630 or go to their Web site. Gifts will be recognized as a contribution to the Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's comprehensive fund-raising campaign to benefit UW-Eau Claire's people and programs.
