Story Idea
A program for business leaders who are exporters or are considering becoming exporters will run from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. May 11 at the Plaza Hotel & Suites. John Konkel, an international consultant with the state Department of Commerce will moderate "Doing Business Globally: Wisconsin Meets the World." Wisconsin's international market directors from Brazil, Canada, China and Mexico will discuss the pros/cons of exporting, developing international markets, and market conditions and opportunities around the world. In honor of 25 years of service, a reception for Ivar Lunde, director and founder of the Chippewa Valley Youth Symphony, will be held at 4:30 p.m. May 13 in the lobby of the Haas Fine Arts Center.
The Symphony will then present its 25th anniversary concert at 7 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall. The concert will be Lunde's last with the Chippewa Valley Youth Symphony. He's served as its director since its inception in 1981. The Symphony offers a creative outlet and symphony experience for area students in grades 7-12. English Professor John Hildebrand received the Minnesota Book Award for "A Northern Front: New and Selected Essays."

Stephen Hill, assistant professor of political science, is editing a special issue of Contemporary Security Policy on the issue of small arms and light weapons. The special issue is designed to generate greater academic interest in the study of small arms and to contribute to the debate before the UN Review Conference of 2006.
Hill teaches courses in international relations theory, international conflict, U.S. foreign policy and world politics. His publications include United Nations Disarmament Processes in Intra-State Conflict and Peacekeeping and the United Nations. Free ACT preparation classes for minority and disadvantaged high school students in the Chippewa Valley will be offered before the national ACT exam dates in fall and spring
beginning in September. UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education, in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Chippewa Valley, Upward Bound, GEAR UP, UW-Eau Claire's Multicultural Affairs Office and the Eau Claire Area Hmong Mutual Assistance Association, was awarded a $7,500 UW-Extension Diversity Program Development Initiative to launch the program. Since ACT scores often determine a student's eligibility for college admission, a higher score can open more doors to students in the future. Popular Madison funk band Phat Phunktion will headline a free outdoor concert at the UW-Eau Claire May 12. The show will start at 7 p.m. on the lawn south of Davies Center.
