EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student Mark Westpfahl, Eau Claire, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the Wisconsin Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel at its spring conference.
Westpfahl, a junior majoring in social studies broadfield teaching, participates in UW-Eau Claire's Student Support Services program. He was nominated for the WAEOPP scholarship by the program's academic advising coordinator, Earl A. Shoemaker.
WAEOPP is made up of staff members throughout the state who work with programs like Student Support Services that serve low-income and first-generation college students. The organization awards a limited number of scholarships each year to students who participate in these programs, evaluating applicants on the basis of academic achievement, co-curricular involvement and financial need.
"Mark is extremely deserving of this scholarship," said Bruce Ouderkirk, director of Student Support Services. "His academic record as a full-time student is impressive enough, but Mark is also a dedicated husband and father, works part-time at the Boys and Girls Club, and coaches football. He's an energetic person with a positive outlook."
