EAU CLAIRE — Popular Madison funk band Phat Phunktion will headline a free outdoor concert at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Friday, May 12. The show will start at 7 p.m. on the lawn south of Davies Center.

Formed by a group of music students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Phat Phunktion has built an enthusiastic and loyal following around the Midwest and throughout the country. An eight-piece tour de force that combines the polish of Top 40 with the smooth feeling of '60s soul and the raw groove of '70s funk, Phat Phunktion has become one of the most talked-about bands in the Midwest.

In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine singled out Phat Phunktion as a "band on the rise," and the band won a Wisconsin Area Music Industry Award for Best R&B Band. Phat Phunktion's latest release, "You and Me," received a 2005 Madison Area Music Award as R&B Album of the Year.

The concert will also feature up-and-coming Minneapolis funk band Brother Big Bad. This funk trio's experiences include having an original song in the Top 25 on the CMJ charts, opening for national touring act Jump Little Children in Nashville, participating in the Cabo Wabo Battle of the Bands at the Hard Rock Cafe in Memphis, and being invited to perform at the Midpoint Music Festival in Cincinnati. Brother Big Bad has also performed in theatrical venues nationwide, in such productions as "The Lovely Liebowitz Sisters," "Schoolhouse Rock Live!" and "Tony and Tina's Wedding."

Local favorite The Vehicle, a popular jazz-fusion-funk group, will open the show.

The concert is free and open to all ages. In the event of rain, the show will be presented in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.

The concert is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.
