Awards and Scholarships Presented at Annual Health Care Administration Banquet

RELEASED: May 1, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — More than 200 people gathered to attend the annual Health Care Administration/CHASE Spring Banquet, "Reaching New Heights," April 20 at the Plaza Hotel & Suites in Eau Claire. Dr. Robyn Stone, executive director of the Institute for the Future of Aging Services at the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging in Washington, D.C., was the guest speaker.

The following individuals received distinguished service awards at the 2006 Spring Banquet.

Mike Schanke, owner/administrator of Oakridge Garden and Grandview Assisted Living in Menasha was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award for his support of the health care administration program at UW-Eau Claire. Schanke served in a leadership role to create the Gene Decker Scholarship Fund and has held various leadership positions with the Wisconsin Health Care Association.

Robert Armitage was the 2006 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. Armitage's commitment to the advancement of the health care administration program at UW-Eau Claire has been evident through his success at steering the creation of the Center for Health and Aging Services Excellence. In addition to serving as a member of the CHASE board of advisors, he has also been a guest lecturer for the health care administration program.

Laura Weiss, a senior health care administration major from Plum City, received the program's Distinguished Student Award, recognizing her exceptional performance and contributions to the health care administration program. Weiss has been an active member of the student organization, ACHCA, and has also worked as a research assistant with Dr. Douglas Olson, associate professor, chair of the public health professions department and coordinator of the health care administration program, and Dr. Mary Zwygart-Stauffacher, professor, nursing systems, and associate dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Many scholarships also were awarded at this year's spring banquet.

Senior Jody Cyr, Weston, and freshman Rebekah Streit, Stanley/Chippewa Falls, received Beverly Healthcare Scholarships, and freshman Kelsy Koch, Rhinelander, received the Extendicare Foundation Scholarship. Seniors Lucas Schubert, Browntown, Laura Weiss, Plum City, Sarah Lokken, Spooner, and Morgan Peters, Hortonville, were awarded John and Mary Gerberich Scholarships, and senior Alesha Gillitzer, Prairie du Chien, received a Gene Decker Scholarship. Sophomore Jessica Remington, Scandinavia, received a scholarship from the Wisconsin Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, and junior Kendall Duffy, Eau Claire, and sophomore Laura Hudack, Baraboo/Wisconsin Dells, received scholarships from the Wisconsin Health Care Association.
