UW-Eau Claire Student Awarded Study Abroad Grant from Phi Kappa Phi

RELEASED: March 31, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — A University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire junior was recently chosen to receive a Phi Kappa Phi Study/Internship Abroad Grant in a highly selective national competition that recognizes and encourages academic achievement in all disciplines.

Susan Lynn Peterson, Delavan, was among only thirty-eight students nationwide to receive the $1,000 Phi Kappa Phi grants, which help support students as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad or participating in an internship abroad.

Peterson, who is majoring in Spanish with a minor in sociology, will study in Cuernavaca, Mexico, for six weeks this summer. She will live with a host family and take two classes at a local university.

"My goal while I'm there is to significantly improve my Spanish communication skills," Peterson said, adding that she's also excited about the travel options she'll have while there and the opportunity to expand her knowledge of Mexican culture.

Peterson said she was excited and honored to receive the grant.

"I honestly was not expecting to receive it," she said. "I have worked so hard academically and in my campus involvements, and it is wonderful to see it all paying off. I am so appreciative and want to thank the honor society," said Peterson.

Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is an honor society that draws its members from all academic disciplines within colleges and universities. The society's mission is "to recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others." Election to membership is by invitation only. Those elected to membership include upper 7.5 percent last-term juniors and upper 10 percent seniors.
