Teachers, Students and Public Invited
to UW-Eau Claire's Annual Math Retreat

EAU CLAIRE — The faculty, staff and students of the department of mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will celebrate the fifteenth annual Mathematics Retreat beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, April 10. Area teachers, their students and parents are especially invited and encouraged to attend.

From 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. students and faculty of UW-Eau Claire will give a variety of mathematics presentations. At 2 p.m. Dr. Herbert W. Hethcote, this year's distinguished visiting speaker, will present a talk appropriate for a general audience on "Modeling Infectious Diseases."

Hethcote, who received his doctoral degree from the University of Michigan, is professor of mathematics at the University of Iowa, where he was chair of the program in applied mathematical and computational sciences from 1982 to 2005. His expertise is in the area of mathematical biology, and he has done important research developing mathematical models of infectious diseases, including pertussis, pertussis vaccination modeling, models of AIDS and gonorrhea transmission.

Hethcote has held research contracts with Aventis Pasteur, The Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, The Centers for Disease Control, The National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, as well as professional positions with University of Michigan, Technical University of Vienna, University of Hawaii, Laboratory of Theoretical Biology-National Institutes of Health and the department of biomathematics at the M.D. Anderson Hospital and Cancer Center. He has served on the editorial boards of such journals as Mathematical Biosciences, SIAM Journal of Applied Mathematics, and the IMA Journal of Mathematics Applied in Medicine and Biology.

A reception for all participants and guests will be held in the mathematics department Seminar Room, Hibbard Hall 507, at 3 p.m. following Dr. Hethcote's afternoon presentation.

At 5:30 p.m. Hethcote will give a talk geared towards math majors on "Modeling Rubella Vaccination Strategies in China."
