UW-Eau Claire Students Do Their Part for American Cancer Relay for Life on April 7

RELEASED: March 28, 2006

Relay for Life logoEAU CLAIRE — Members of Colleges Against Cancer are organizing this year's American Cancer Relay for Life event to be held Friday, April 7, on the McPhee Ade Olson Center Track of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire upper campus.

CAC member Brianna Paul is helping to organize 53 teams for the event to reach their goal of $43,000. Last year the group raised $37,000, and Paul said that with growing interest and student participation, they hope to reach this year's goal.

"Anyone and everyone can come to this event," said Paul. "We ask that if you are not registered on a team that you give a small donation at the door."

Relay for Life is an overnight event that unites the community in a common effort to raise much-needed funds for cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services. Every year the funds raised help bring the American Cancer Society one step closer to eliminating the disease.

The event begins with an opening ceremony at 6 p.m. to identify the American Caner Society and the goals of Relay for Life. This ceremony includes a victory lap led by cancer survivors. Lighted luminaries decorated with names and photos of those who lost their battles with cancer and those who survived will light the way for walkers. The event will close with one last opportunity for cancer survivors and their caregivers to walk the track and extend appreciation to all relay participants.

The event also includes an all-night DJ, two bands and a magician's performance. Activities including Relay Olympics, an Around the World basketball tournament and other contests with prizes will occur throughout the night. Free food will be provided.
