EAU CLAIRE — Battlefield Band, the premiere representative of Scottish music on the world music scene today, will perform Thursday, April 6, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Artists Series concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Schofield Auditorium.

Under the banner "Forward with Scotland's Past," Battlefield Band has performed on the international scene for more than three decades. Inspired by their rich heritage of Celtic music and fired by the strength of the modern Scottish cultural scene, the group mixes the old songs with new original material, performing on a unique fusion of ancient and modern instruments.

"What the internationally renowned Irish band, the Chieftains, has done for Irish music, Battlefield Band is doing for the music of Scotland," wrote Billboard magazine.

Founded by a group of friends in 1969 and named after the "Battlefield" section of Glasgow, Battlefield Band plays to audiences in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Canada and more than 60 cities annually in the United States. Their music is heard regularly on National Public Radio's "Thistle and Shamrock" program, and they are frequent guests on Minnesota Public Radio's "A Prairie Home Companion."

Personnel changes over 34 years have seen individuals going on to play in other bands, and new members bringing new ideas, attitudes and influences. The current lineup features one original member, Alan Reid (keyboards, guitar, vocals), and three musicians who were not even born when Battlefield Band began: Alasdair White (fiddle, whistle, banjo, bazouki, highland and small pipes, bodhran); Mike Katz (highland bagpipes, small pipes, whistles, guitar); and Sean O'Donnell (vocals, guitar). Angry, joyful, raucous and contemplative, their music is accessible to all.

Tickets are $15 for the public, $13 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, and $5 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students.

Tickets are available at the Service Center counter in the east lobby of Davies Center and also will be sold at the door. The Service Center is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call (715) 836-3727 — or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

The Artists Series is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin. Wisconsin Public Radio and Community Television have contributed generous promotional support. Best Western Trail Lodge Hotel & Suites (715-838-9989) at 3340 Mondovi Road is the exclusive accommodations partner for the Artists Series.

Funded by the students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the Artists Series is administered by the Activities and Programs office.
