Beaver Creek Reserve Director the April 7 Featured Speaker for First Fridays

RELEASED: March 23, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — Rick Koziel, director of the Beaver Creek Reserve, will be the April 7 speaker for the First Fridays colloquium for senior citizens.

A free continental breakfast will precede the formal program at Christ Church Cathedral, located on the corner of Lake and Farwell Streets in downtown Eau Claire. Doors will open for breakfast at 8:30 a.m., and the presentation will begin at 9 a.m. in the Memorial Lounge.

Called "a natural leader" by Wisconsin West magazine, Koziel is a teacher and a naturalist, with undergraduate training in education and a graduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He became director of Beaver Creek Reserve in 1978, taking responsibility for a site that then included about 160 acres of land, a youth camp with a lodge and cabins, and a caretaker's home. Under his leadership, the reserve has expanded to include more than 360 acres, a nature center, observatory, greenhouse, butterfly house and a Citizen Science Center.

Koziel's presentation will focus on the activities of the nature center; programs for students and the community at large including the environmental and science studies offered in cooperation with area schools; and the Citizen Science Center, which gets volunteers and community members involved in field research.

For the safety of the program's senior citizen audience, the event will be cancelled if the Eau Claire Area School District cancels or delays classes in the case of hazardous weather.

First Fridays is funded by support from the UW-Eau Claire Foundation Community Outreach Program for the Arts, contributions from Elliott Roberts, and a grant from the Cultural Arts Grant Fund of the Chippewa Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau. The program is coordinated by Beverly Soll and Jennifer Brockpahler of the UW-Eau Claire Activities and Programs office, and by Scott and Heather Kirby of Christ Church Cathedral.

First Fridays events are presented on the first Friday of each month October through May, with the exception of January, at no cost to the senior community. "All Aboard the Eau Claire Express" is the theme of the 2005-06 season.
