EAU CLAIRE — Eau Claire author Cathy Sultan will host a reading and discussion from noon-1 p.m. March 27 in The Cabin of Davies Center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

" Readings from the Heart: Featuring Eau Claire author Cathy Sultan" is part of Women's History Month. The event is free and open to the public.

Sultan, a native of Washington, D.C., moved in 1969 with her Lebanese husband and two children from the United States to Beirut, Lebanon — a city then known for its welcoming residents, Mediterranean climate and blend of Arab and Western culture.

For six years her home was a rooftop apartment with a breathtaking view of the city. Her husband had a successful medical practice and her children were growing up speaking English, French and Arabic.

But in April 1975, the Phalange militia attacked the Palestinians in East Beirut, an event that set off fighting throughout the country. Sultan's street became a deadly territorial divide: the infamous Green Line, separating East from West Beirut. Despite the danger, she and her family remained amid the fighting with the hope that the conflict would soon end.

"A Beirut Heart: One Woman's War" is a memoir about her experience as a wife and mother living for eight years in the Lebanese Civil War.

Sultan and her husband now live in Eau Claire. Sultan is on the executive board at the National Peace Foundation, where she directs Middle East educational projects. She's involved with "Women in Black," a group that stands in silent vigil to protest war, ethnic cleansing and human rights abuses. She's also writing another book about the Middle East.

Event sponsors include the Commission on the Status of Women, McIntyre Library, the women's studies department, the English department and the Center for International Education.
