Complying with Directives for Exporting to Europe Topic of April 7 Program

RELEASED: March 20, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — A program designed to help Wisconsin companies that plan to export to the European Union ensure that products comply with appropriate EU regulations will run from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 7 at the Chippewa Valley Technical College, Gateway Campus.

The "Complying with RoHS and WEEE Directives" program will feature Yvonne Halpus, senior partner at QNET LLC, a Minneapolis quality assurance and international trade consulting firm that specializes in RoHS and WEEE Directive consulting. Halpus will discuss the essentials for Wisconsin businesses that plan to export to Europe or supply materials for products exported to Europe.

The program will focus on five areas that affect a variety of manufacturers:

  • Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive
  • Restriction of Use of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive
  • Product testing to determine compliance
  • Locating test equipment
  • Ensuring compliance by July 1

Program speakers include Halpus; Dr. Doug Dunham, director, UW-Eau Claire Materials Science Center; and Stephen Ellenson, a manufacturing engineer who helped an electronics manufacturer in this region prepare for compliance with RoHS and WEEE directives.

Oxford Instruments will demonstrate how to use X-Ray Flouresence equipment to determine material acceptability. Participants can bring sample material to be tested.

Program sponsors include Xcel Energy, Chippewa Valley Technical College, the Small Business Development Center, Wisconsin Entrepreneurs' Network, Northwest Wisconsin Manufacturing Outreach Center, University of Wisconsin Eau Claire Continuing Education/Extension, UW-Eau Claire Materials Science Center and the Wisconsin Department of Commerce.
