Town Hall Meeting in Eau Claire to Address Underage Drinking

RELEASED: March 17, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is working in partnership with the Coalition for Youth, Eau Claire Area School District, Marshfield Clinic Community Outreach, and the Consortium for Substance Abuse Prevention in Eau Claire County to host a National Town Hall Meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, at the Plaza Hotel and Suites.

The meeting is sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the Interagency Coordinating Committee for the Prevention of Underage Drinking.

Town hall-style meetings will take place in communities across America on or around March 28 in order to help educate young people and caring adults about the risks associated with underage drinking.

The meeting in Eau Claire will focus on the issue of fake IDS and will be the first in a series of programs exploring underage drinking issues. The agenda for this meeting includes a panel discussion by UW-Eau Claire students, Water Street business owners, local law enforcement, and medical providers.

Dr. Larry McFarland, a local pediatrician, will be the keynote speaker. Sarah Stokes from WEAU TV-13 will serve as moderator. Also featured will be the new Public Service Announcements, "Start Talking Before They Start Drinking," which will be made available for community members to use; video presentations; displays; and other outreach materials.

This meeting is intended for all members of the community who care about youth and want to engage in community-wide planning for long-term change. Over 1000 communities across the country will be involved.

The program is free, but those interested in attending are asked to register in advance by calling (715) 839-4718 or e-mailing Pamela Radcliffe, coordinator for the Consortium for Substance Abuse Prevention, at Pamela.Radcliffe@co.eau-claire.wi.us.
