in Optimist Essay Contest

RELEASED: March 10, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire freshman Yan Ying Lam, Eau Claire/Hong Kong, China, placed third in the Eau Claire Optimist Club Annual Essay Contest. This year's topic was "I am unique because…"

"I think unique is the best way to describe me," Lam said. "In the essay, I mainly wrote about my background history and my beliefs."

Lam also used her love of travel and her interaction with different people as a theme in her essay.

For the essay's third place finish in the contest, Lam won $75 and a bronze medallion.

Lam was born in Hong Kong and lived there for sixteen years. She took the Hong Kong Certificate Examination in 2004 and then joined the American Field Service student exchange program.

After spending her senior year at Fall Creek high school, Lam is now taking classes at UW-Eau Claire. In the future she would like to become a graphic designer and travel. Lam said that she may stay in the United States for three more years and then go back home to Hong Kong after graduation.

The Essay Contest is sponsored by Optimist International to give young people a chance to write about their own opinions regarding the world they live in.
