Lucretia Mattson Elected Secretary of Wisconsin Accounting Examining Board

EAU CLAIRE — Dr. Lucretia Mattson, a professor in the department of accounting at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, has been elected secretary of the Wisconsin Accounting Examining Board, the seven-member board that regulates the certified public accounting profession in the state of Wisconsin.

Mattson was appointed as a professional accounting member to the board by Gov. Jim Doyle. The State Senate confirmed the appointment in March 2004 for a term expiring July 1, 2007. The Wisconsin Institute of CPAs was instrumental in her appointment.

Mattson is well-known nationally and in Wisconsin as a leader in the accounting profession. She served on the Governing Council of the American Institute of CPAs from 2001 to 2003 and as president of the Wisconsin Institute of CPAs in 1998-1999.

In 2002, The Western Dairyland Community Action Agency gave Mattson its Community Services Award, recognizing her long-term service as coordinator of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistant project. Mattson has worked with UW- Eau Claire student volunteers to provide income tax assistant to thousands of low-income individuals and families in this region since 1988.

Mattson also has received numerous awards from UW-Eau Claire and the accounting profession, including the Educator of the Year Award from the American Woman's Society of CPAs in 2001. In 2000, she received the UW-Eau Claire Excellence in Teaching Award and the UW-Eau Claire Excellence in Service Award — the first time in the history of the university that an individual won both awards in one year. She also received the UW-Eau Claire Peat Marwick Professor of the Year Award in both 1997 and 1989.

An active member of the WICPA since 1984, Mattson received the WICPA Achievement Award in 1998 for her role in the statewide component of the CPA Vision Project, a national grassroots effort designed to give CPAs input into forging the future of their own profession. She was awarded the WICPA Spirit Award in 1995 and the WICPA Teacher of the Year Award in 1993. Mattson also was a member of the AICPA Vision Task Force.

Besides teaching at UW-Eau Claire, Mattson works for Bernicke & Associates, Ltd. in Eau Claire, where she serves both tax and financial planning clients.
