'Girl With a Pearl Earring' to Screen at UW-Eau Claire March 9-12

RELEASED: March 1, 2006

Girl With a Pearl Earring posterEAU CLAIRE — "Girl With a Pearl Earring" (2003), a fictionalized account of how Dutch master painter Johannes Vermeer's most famous painting came to be, will screen March 9-12 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The film will be presented at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre.

Set in Delft, Holland, in 1665, "Girl With a Pearl Earring" stars Scarlett Johansson as a peasant girl working in the house of Vermeer (Colin Firth). Though worlds apart in their upbringing, education and social standing, the artist recognizes the girl's intuitive understanding of color and light and draws her into the mysterious world of his paintings.

"Peter Webber's exceedingly accomplished first feature beautifully evokes the world the artist inhabited 340 years ago while deftly and discreetly delineating the personal intrigue within his teeming household," wrote Variety.

"It's a measure of the mesmerizing power of 'Girl With a Pearl Earring' and the flawless performances of Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson that audiences feel as if they are spying on a moment of artistic inspiration when painter Vermeer creates the title work," wrote USA Today. "The cinematic adaptation of Tracy Chevalier's novel attempts to unravel the mystery behind one of Vermeer's best-known paintings. Chevalier's fictional account of a 17-year-old servant girl who served as the artist's model is the scaffolding upon which a much more nuanced, sensuous tale is built."

An Academy Award nominee for cinematography, art direction and costume design, the 100-minute color film is rated PG-13.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727, in Davies Center's east lobby and at the door. The film is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.
