EAU CLAIRE — The U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board recently announced that Amanda Hill, Madison, who graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in May with a bachelor of science degree in biology and French, has received a Fulbright Award to travel to Belgium for teaching English as a foreign language.

Hill will work as a teaching assistant in an English class at the Université de Mons-Hainaut, which is located in the south of Belgium near the French border. She also will conduct classroom-based research on the effect on language learning when students are introduced to many different native speaker accents.

"Depending on the outcome of this research, I may use some alternative approaches to teaching language upon my return," said Hill, noting that she eventually hopes to find a teaching job in the Chippewa Valley. She is originally from Madison and graduated from East High School in 2000.

Hill is one of more than 1,200 U.S. citizens who will travel abroad for the 2006-07 academic year through the Fulbright Student Program. Established in 1946, the program operates in more than 150 countries with the aim of building mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the rest of the world. It is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, administered by the Institute of International Education, and is a highly competitive national award.

With six Fulbright grant recipients since the year 2000, UW-Eau Claire has had more successful Fulbright applicants than any other UW System master's-level institution.
