UW-Eau Claire to Offer Variety
of Summer Pre-College Camps

RELEASED: June 19, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — The Office of Multicultural Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will sponsor a variety of pre-college camps that give socioeconomically disadvantaged youth the opportunity to visit the UW-Eau Claire campus while developing the communication and leadership skills necessary for success in higher education. The programs include tuition, on-campus stays in residence halls, three meals a day, field trips, a group photo and T-shirt, recreation and transportation.

Following is a list of the camps offered this summer:

  • Math and Science Summer Program, June 18-25, Grades 6-12 - This program, a partnership between Milwaukee Public Schools, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Milwaukee, is designed to increase scientific and mathematical thinking, questioning and reasoning skills while stimulating interest in math and the sciences. Participants do not need a background in math or science, only an interest in the subjects and a desire to learn more about life on a college campus. Once students complete this program, they are connected with the QUEST program, administered through UW-Milwaukee, which offers enrichment opportunities throughout the academic year.
  • Youth Leadership, July 8-22, Grades 7-11 - The Youth Leadership camp will improve personal skills and understanding of both Hmong and American culture as well as math, English and science skills while introducing participants to new people and improving leadership abilities.
  • Reach for the Stars, July 9-12, Grades 9-10 – In this program, participants will explore science fields and careers while refining communication skills and learning about the solar system. The camp includes a visit to an observatory and planetarium and a view of the night sky through a huge telescope.
  • Strengthening Our Nations, July 23-Aug. 4, Grades 8-11 – This program will use American Indian culture as a thematic vehicle for developing successful study habits and time management skills. The focus will be on reading, writing, career exploration and leadership building.
  • Opening Doors, July 30-Aug. 5, Grades 9-10 – The goal of this program is to reinforce English and Spanish literacy skills and create and maintain a connection to Spanish history and culture. The camp emphasizes reading, math, writing and critical thinking skills applied through fun-filled activities both on and off campus.
