RELEASED: July 27, 2006

photo of footEAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Continuing Education is now accepting registrations for "Foot and Nail Care," a program designed for nurse practitioners, wound care nurses, diabetic educators and registered nurses working in public health, elderly services, long term care and diabetic education

The demand for foot and nail care is increasing, fueled by rising rates of diabetes and our aging population. This course provides the tools needed to begin a practice of basic foot and nail care. It also qualifies participants to take the certification exam for foot and nail care offered by the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board.

Tara Buescher, a registered nurse and clinical specialist in gerontology at Marshfield Clinic, Lakewood Center, Minocqua, has a wealth of teaching and clinical experience in foot and nail care. She developed "Foot and Nail Care Education for Nurses" in collaboration with local senior centers and the ADN nursing program. Buescher draws upon her work experience in clinic, hospital, home care and nursing home settings, and her extensive training in foot care, pain management, wound, ostomy, continence and gerontology services. Topics covered include nursing interventions, anatomy and physiology, lower leg assessment, patient teaching, care of toenails and hyperkeratotic lesions, protection of the feet, and a clinical practicum.

This fall's course is scheduled for Oct.19-20. Dates in 2007 are Jan.18-19; April 19-20; June 14-15; and Oct. 18-19. The first day of each session is held at the Best Western Trail Lodge & Suites; the second day is at First Lutheran Church. Both locations are in Eau Claire. Class times are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for day one and 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for day two.

Tuition is $399 and includes two lunches, refreshments, program manual, instruction and supervised practice. Enrollment is limited and past programs have filled quickly, so register early to guarantee your spot.
