'Crash' to Screen Feb. 2-5 at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: Jan. 26, 2006

Crash posterEAU CLAIRE — "Crash," a provocative film about the complexities of racial tolerance in contemporary America that tops many critics' top-ten lists for 2005, will screen Feb. 2-5 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The directing debut of writer-producer Paul Haggis ("Million Dollar Baby"), the film will be presented Thursday through Sunday at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

"Crash" dives headlong into the diverse melting pot of post-9/11 Los Angeles. Taking place over 36 hours, the urban drama is set around a seemingly simple car accident that brings together a multi-ethnic cast of characters. As their lives collide, the issue of racism is explored as each works through their own fears and inherent prejudices.

"The movie is constructed as a series of parables, in which the characters meet and meet again; the movie shows them both sinned against, and sinning," wrote Roger Ebert, who named "Crash" the best film of the year. "'Crash' tells interlocking stories of whites, blacks, Latinos, Koreans, Iranians, cops and criminals, the rich and the poor, the powerful and powerless, all defined in one way or another by racism. All are victims of it, and all are guilty of it. Sometimes, yes, they rise above it, although it is never that simple.

"Not many films have the possibility of making their audiences better people. I don't expect 'Crash' to work any miracles, but I believe anyone seeing it is likely to be moved to have a little more sympathy for people not like themselves."

The cast includes Sandra Bullock, Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, Jennifer Esposito, William Fichtner, Brendan Fraser, Terrence Howard, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Thandie Newton, Ryan Phillippe and Larenz Tate. The 113-minute film is rated R.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty/staff, or $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727, in Davies Center's east lobby and at the door. The film is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.
