New Planetarium Shows to Debut During Spring Semester at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: Jan. 19, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — New planetarium shows as well as old favorites will be offered to the public at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire during the spring semester.

Shows are offered Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. and Saturday mornings at 11 a.m. whenever UW-Eau Claire is in session. The Saturday morning shows are aimed at children ages 4-11 and are made possible by the Eau Claire Area Foundation with a grant from the American Girl Company.

A special show on Jan. 31 will highlight "New Discoveries in Astronomy." Current astronomy news includes the recently discovered "tenth planet," the newly discovered moons of Pluto, and results from the orbiting Chandra X-ray telescope.

Two new programs are on the schedule this spring. "More than Meets the Eye" will be seen at the children's show on Feb.18, and the longer version of the program will debut Feb. 21 at the Tuesday evening show. "More than Meets the Eye" reveals celestial objects that you can see through a telescope and will show where in the sky these cosmic wonders are located. A new program for the younger children, "The Friendly Stars," will be offered Feb. 4 and 11. The new shows were also funded by a grant to the L.E. Phillips Planetarium from the American Girl Company, through the Eau Claire Area Foundation.

All shows include a discussion of the current night sky. Group shows and school field trips can be arranged by calling (715) 836-5034.

The L.E. Phillips Planetarium is located in Phillips Science Hall on the UW-Eau Claire campus, with convenient free parking after 6 p.m. and on weekends. The $1 tickets can be purchased at the information desk in Davies Center (715-836-3727), next door to Phillips Hall. A schedule of shows can be found at the Planetarium Web site.
