Musical Events for the Week of Jan. 23

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning Monday, Jan. 23. All events are free and open to the public.

Wednesday, Jan. 25:

  • "Winter Discursion," a faculty recital featuring compositions by Michael Cunningham, professor of music, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall. Various faculty members will perform. The program will begin with Horn Sonata No. 2, performed by Verle Ormsby and pianist Barbara Wimunc-Pearson, followed by "Shakespeare Sonnets, Set. 8" performed by tenor Mark Mowry and pianist Namji Kim. A Clarinet Sonata will be performed by Richard Fletcher and pianist Wimunc-Pearson, followed by "Shakespeare Sonnets, Set 9," performed by Wimunc-Pearson and soprano Mitra Sadeghpour. The program will conclude with Bassoon Sonata No. 2, performed by Kristine Fletcher and pianist Beverly Soll.

Sunday, Jan. 29:

  • Pianist Namji Kim will present a faculty recital at 2 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall. Kim, an assistant professor of music, will begin the concert with Bach's Prelude and Fugue in E Major from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II, and continue with Mozart's Sonata in a minor, KV 310. For the second half of the recital, Kim will perform Chopin's Ballade No. 1 in g minor and Schumann's Sonata in g minor, Op. 22. Kim, who earned degrees from the Julliard and Manhattan Schools of Music, was a finalist at the Kahn International Piano Competition in Paris and at the Chopin International Competition in Majorca, as well as a prize winner at the International Beethoven Sonata Piano Competition in Memphis, Tennessee. Kim's concert schedule has included performances around North America, Europe, Russia, and Korea, where in addition to her recitals she appeared on television and radio broadcasts.
