Break! to Open the Artists Series for Spring Semester at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: Jan. 17, 2006

Break!EAU CLAIRE — Break! The Urban Funk Spectacular will open the spring semester of the Artists Series at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Thursday, Feb. 2. The New York City hip-hop dance company will take the Zorn Arena stage at 7:30 p.m.

The Houston Chronicle called Steve Love's colorful ode to break dancing "full-throttle entertainment, a cross between the percussion-oriented Stomp and Savion Glover's tap history. … Ten of the world's most virtuosic break dancers strut their stuff with attitude, humor and loads of personality."

Members of Break! have been featured soloists in performances with Madonna, Janet Jackson, B2K, 50 Cent, Ringo Starr, Whitney Houston, Puff Daddy and Luther Vandross.

The ensemble's performance is a tribute to a distinctive American art form with hazy African roots that run deep through the streets of inner cities. Comprised of five elements — dance, MC (or "rap"), DJ, graffiti, and fashion — hip-hop is improvised and recombined in a myriad of rhythms and styles so that the dance form reinvents itself continually. Break dancing has also been influenced by the muscular and acrobatic elements of the martial arts.

Tickets are $15 for the public, $13 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, and $5 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students. Reserved seats are available at the Service Center counter in the east lobby of Davies Center. The Service Center is open Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call (715) 836-3727 — or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

General admission tickets will be sold at the door.

This presentation is supported by the Heartland Arts Fund, a program of Arts Midwest funded by the National Endowment for the Arts with additional contributions from General Mills Foundation, Land O' Lakes Foundation and Sprint Corporation, and by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin. The performance is cosponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.

Wisconsin Public Radio and Community Television have contributed generous promotional support. Best Western Trail Lodge Hotel & Suites, (715-838-9989) at 3340 Mondovi Road, is the exclusive accommodations partner for the Artists Series.

Funded by the students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the Artists Series is administered by the Activities and Programs office.
