Benefit Performances of 'The Vagina Monologues' Set for March 8, 9 and 10 at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: Feb. 27, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — Three benefit performances of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. March 8, 9 and 10 in Schofield Auditorium at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Making Our School An Intercultural Community, a UW-Eau Claire Housing and Residence Life diversity task force, is sponsoring the student production of this compilation of women's thoughts, feelings and experiences related to being a woman. The topics of the monologues range from coming of age to instances of sexual assault.

For the past decade MOSAIC has held events to celebrate V-Day, a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. The V-Day College Campaign invites members of college and university communities around the world to present benefit productions of "The Vagina Monologues" to raise money and awareness to help stop violence.

MOSAIC will donate 90 percent of the proceeds of its production to The Bolton Refuge House, a domestic violence/sexual assault shelter in Eau Claire, and 10 percent to the Global V-Day campaign for justice to "comfort women." The "comfort women" were civilians forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese military between 1932 and 1945. They are fighting for an official apology and compensation from the Japanese government.

The Second Annual Art Show and Silent Auction will take place during "The Vagina Monologues." The silent art auction is seeking local artists' donations until Tuesday, March 7, at Putnam Hall or Towers Hall front desk. Proceeds benefit the Bolton Refuge House.

Admission for performances of "The Vagina Monologues" is $7 with a UW-Eau Claire student ID, $10 with a UW-Eau Claire faculty or staff ID and $10 for the general public. Tickets are available at the University Service Center in the east lobby of Davies Center, (715) 836-3727.

In addition to the benefit performances, other activities are planned for V-Day. On Friday, March 3, there will be a benefit for the Bolton Refuge House from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Higherground. The cost is $3 and begins with a formal dance with free lessons from Two to Tango at 8 p.m., followed by a Hip-Hop and Techno Dance Party with special guest DJ E-Dubs from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Two Viennese Ball tickets will be given out at 11 p.m. and at midnight 100 free glow sticks will be distributed to people at the Hip-Hop and Techno Dance Party.

A V-Day men's event will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 11, in Schofield Auditorium. The event will feature male performers from UW-Eau Claire giving monologues and singing about men's issues to help support the V-Day campaign efforts. The cost is $5.

A discussion on "The Vagina Monologues" will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, March 13, in the Alumni Room of Davies Center. The discussion is a campus and community event sponsored by MOSAIC and the Women's and Gender Equity Center.
