EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's department of economics will be able to support student activity opportunities thanks to a $10,000 commitment by UW-Eau Claire alumnus Harry Kaiser.

The fund, a first for the department, will support student travel to professional meetings, development of student research projects and student participation in other economics-related activities, particularly for majors interested in pursuing graduate study.

Kaiser, who graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1979 and is now a professor in the department of economics and management at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y, said he benefited from a similar opportunity when he was a student.

"When I was a senior I was able to attend a major social science conference," Kaiser, said. "Attending this conference and seeing world-class scholars present research results was a highlight of my four years of study."

Creating this fund is a way of returning the opportunity to a future UW-Eau Claire economics student, Kaiser said. "I would not be where I am today without the excellent education I received from UW-Eau Claire in general or the economics department specifically. I am excited about giving back something to the university."

Providing experiences inside and outside the classroom that help students succeed is a priority of the economics department, said Ed Young, chair of the economics department.

"Our goal is for our students to have successful and rewarding lives both during their time at UW-Eau Claire and after," Young said. "We are grateful to our alumni like Harry who support the department. They are helping us to achieve that goal."

The Kaiser gift is recognized as a contribution to Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's ongoing comprehensive campaign to benefit UW-Eau Claire's people and programs, and represents a mark of excellence for the economics department.

"Support by alumni like Harry Kaiser is helping to turn a very good economics program into an excellent one," said Young.
