Chicago Singer-Songwriter Martha Berner to Perform at UW-Eau Claire's Cabin

RELEASED: Feb. 27, 2006

Martha BernerEAU CLAIRE — Chicago singer-songwriter Martha Berner will present three free concerts at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire March 9-11. Part of the campus' celebration of Women's History Month, her shows will begin at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday in The Cabin of Davies Center.

With a wellspring of captivating songs that dig deep into the soul of American roots music, Berner injects a distinct, modern rock flavor that melds old and new into a timeless collection of indie folk-rock. In October she released her full-length debut album, "This Side of Yesterday," recorded in Lexington, Ky., Lake Geneva and Madison. While Berner is showcased as an accomplished vocalist, her talents are also evident on acoustic guitar, cornet and harmonica — which, at times, evokes comparisons to Bob Dylan, Natalie Merchant and John Lennon's post-Beatles material. Maybe it is Berman's nomadic way of life (she has called Chicago, San Francisco, Alaska, Israel, the Virgin Islands, Thailand and Williams Bay, Wis., all home at some point) that lends a worldly knowledge to both her lyrics and music.

People of all ages are welcome to The Cabin performances. Soda, tea, coffee and coffee-related beverages, and domestic and imported beer will be sold. Proof of age is required for alcohol purchases.

The Cabin program is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate. For more information visit the Cabin Web site or contact the Activities and Programs office, (715) 836-4833.
