EAU CLAIRE — Dr. Kevin Neuman, a University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire alumnus and assistant professor of economics at UW-Stevens Point, will present the Jerry Johnson Memorial Lecture at 3 p.m. Friday, March 3, in Davies Theatre.

Neuman's topic will be "The Economics of an Aging America: The Growing Storm."

Neuman said he chose this topic because he is interested in the labor market and, in particular, the issue of retirement. He believes retirement is an institution in society that deserves preservation.

"I also recognize the very real problems that retirement brings up and the fact that reforms need to be made to preserve the idea of retirement, particularly with regard to Social Security," Neuman said.

In addition to Social Security, Neuman will also discuss health care issues of the aging population.

"I believe that economic issues related to our population getting older are some of the most urgent, and therefore some of the most interesting to investigate," Neuman said, adding that economics department chair Dr. Ed Young said having a lecture presented by an economics alum who had continued in the field would be both interesting and helpful to students.

Neuman graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1999 and went on to earn master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Notre Dame.

The Jerry Johnson Memorial Lecture is an annual event named for a UW-Eau Claire economics professor who died in 1998. The event is sponsored by the department of economics and the UW-Eau Claire Foundation through a fund established by Johnson after he retired.

"The goal is to remember Jerry Johnson and to recognize his contributions to the university and the students," Young said.

A reception with punch, snacks, cookies and a meet-and-greet will follow the presentation. The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Young at youngeg@uwec.edu.
