Performing Artist Reanae McNeal to Give Presentations at UW-Eau Claire

Reanae McNeal as a storytellerEAU CLAIRE — As part of the Women's History Month activities at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, playwright and performing artist Reanae McNeal will visit campus Friday and Saturday, March 3 and 4, to give several of her dynamic presentations.

At noon Friday, McNeal will give a brown bag lecture presentation, "The Women Gathered," in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center. According to McNeal, this lecture gives voice to powerful, diverse women from around the world and is empowering as it tells their stories and gives beauty to who they are.

At 6:30 p.m. Friday, McNeal will perform her one-woman play, "Don't Speak My Mother's Name in Vain," in Schofield Auditorium. The play introduces eight female characters ranging historically from African enslavement to present day. All of the characters are survivors of sexual assault at the hands of either white or black men. Issues confronted include "racism, sexism, classism, slavery, the reconstruction era, the Marcus Garvey movement, the Civil Right movement, sexual harassment, child abuse, molestation incest, gang rape, drug addition, hate crimes, abortion and healing."

Immediately following the performance, a dessert reception will be held in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center until 9 p.m. All the above events are free and open to the public.

McNeal also will be the guest speaker at the 11th annual Outstanding Women of Color in Education Awards ceremony and luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 4, in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center. Tickets and reservations are required for this event.

Sponsors of McNeal's campus visit include the UW-Eau Claire Women's Studies Program, the departments of history and social work, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Office of Student Development and Diversity, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the Center for Awareness of Sexual Assault, the Women's and Gender Equity Center, Wisconsin Women in Higher Education Leadership, UW System Women’s Studies Consortium, the UW-Eau Claire Commission on the Status of Women, the Multicultural Women's Association and a Visiting Minority Scholar Grant from the Affirmative Action Office.
