Area Earnings and Incomes Rankings to Be Topic
of UW-Eau Claire Alumni Luncheon

RELEASED: Feb. 17, 2006

Let's Do Lunch postcardEAU CLAIRE — Eau Claire's continual low ranking in measures of earnings and incomes among the 11 Wisconsin urban areas will be the topic of an hour-long luncheon presentation hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Alumni Association on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Sweetwaters Restaurant.

Edward Young, professor and chair of the department of economics at UW-Eau Claire, will examine the income statistics over the past 30 years and the reasons why Eau Claire's low-income ranking persists. He will look at efforts to improve the economic conditions in the Eau Claire area and why they are not reflected in improvement to earnings and income.

"The low income ranking may be due to bad policy, structural forces, or misleading statistics," Young said. "Depending on the source of the low ranking then, there may be a solution; there may be no solution; or there may be no problem."

Young, who has his bachelor's degree from UW-Milwaukee and his master's and doctoral degrees from Washington State University, served on the Eau Claire City Council from 1989 to 1994. While serving on the council he developed an interest in the local labor market conditions, which led him to conduct research on local labor markets, the impact of minimum wage laws and the evaluation of employment and training programs at the local level.

Upcoming "Let's Do Lunch" speakers, dates and topics include: Lucretia Mattson, DBA, professor of accounting and finance, March 29, "Tax Law Changes for 2005 and 2006"; and J. Erik Hendrickson, associate professor of physics and astronomy, April 26, "Dealing with Extreme Temperatures: Beyond Cold."

The speaker series is open to the public. The price is $10 per session and includes the presentation, buffet, beverage, tax and tip. For reservations and details on upcoming topics and speakers go to the Alumni Association Web site or call (715) 836-3266.
