UW-Eau Claire Students Continue Tradition
of Donating Bowls for 'Empty Bowls' Event

RELEASED: Feb. 16, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — Ceramics students from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire department of art & design are pitching in to help fight hunger in the Chippewa Valley. The students, under the direction of assistant professor Susan O’Brien, are donating 200 hand-made ceramic bowls to Feed My People Food Bank for the upcoming "Empty Bowls" fundraiser. Additional bowls are being donated by both professional potters and high school ceramics students.

Empty Bowls is a benefit supper of soup, specialty breads, and desserts that will take place from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1314 East Lexington, Eau Claire. The soups are being donated by Bridgewaters, the Eau Claire Country Club, Houligans, and Sweetwaters; the bread is from Great Harvest Bread, Co.; and area churches and volunteers are providing desserts. Many area businesses and organizations are sponsoring the event.

Ticket prices are $15 for supper and a hand-designed bowl, $8 for the supper alone, and $40 for a family pack of two bowls and supper for up to five individuals. Children age 10 and younger are free. Bowl numbers are limited; advance ticket purchase is recommended. Tickets are available at Trinity Lutheran, UW-Eau Claire Service Center and Feed My People Food Bank.

Student coordinators of the project at UW-Eau Claire are seniors Morgan Hanson, Amery, and Amir Seltz, Middleton/Madison. One of graphic design professor Li-Ying Bao's classes designed posters for the event. A poster designed by Michelle Oostdik, a senior graphic design major from Prairie de Sac/Eau Claire, was selected to represent the 2006 event. In addition to involvement with Empty Bowls, university students sponsor Hunger Week on campus each fall to raise money and awareness to help fight hunger.

Feed My People Food Bank is a food distribution center that supplies over 750,000 pounds of food to 45 area pantries and charitable organizations each year. The food Feed My People distributes provides approximately 50,000 meals in West-Central Wisconsin every month.
