'Bat Boy: The Musical' to Open at UW-Eau Claire March 2

'Bat Boy, the Musical' imageEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire production of "Bat Boy: The Musical" is set to open at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 2, in Kjer Theatre. Additional performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. March 3-4 and March 8-11. There will also be a matinee performance at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 5.

"Bat Boy: The Musical," winner of the 2001 New York Outer Critics Circle Award for Best-Off Broadway Musical, is a comedy/horror show taken from the book by Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming. Bat Boy, a half boy/half bat, is discovered living in a cave and is taken in by the town veterinarian. Although the veterinarian's family is kind to him, Bat Boy is outcast from the society of the town. Bat Boy and the veterinarian's daughter fall in love and run away together. Their happiness is shattered when a shocking secret is revealed about Bat Boy. "Big Laughs," said the New York Times. "Its remarkable wit can accomplish a jaggedly imaginative mix of skewering humor and energetic glee."

Senior C. Max Athorn, Minneapolis, Minn., will play the title role of Bat Boy and junior Caitlin Nelson, Green Bay, will play Meredith Parker. Freshman Kevin Newell, Edgar, is cast as Dr. Thomas Parker; junior Andrea Fuss, Waupaca, as Shelley Parker; freshman Anthony Zillmer, Green Bay, as Rick Taylor; and freshman Andrew Arends, La Crescent, Minn., as Ron Taylor. Senior Jennifer Aldridge, Eau Claire, will play Ruthie Taylor, and senior Margaret Aspinwall, Madison, will play Mrs. Taylor.

Also appearing in the cast are junior Hanna Agar, Westby; freshman Brittany Gusho, Milwaukee; senior Christine Ernst, Phillips; senior Aaron Loy, Rosemount, Minn.; freshman Ryan McDaniel, Oregon; freshman Shea Thongnuam, Madison; senior Meagan Britain, Rochester, Minn.; senior Kelly Burau, Victoria; junior Ben Seidman, Shorewood; freshman Kazuta Kuroki, St. Louis Park, Minn.; freshman Edward Neve, De Forest; and senior Steven Davis, West Allis.

The production is being directed by Richard Nimke, associate professor of theatre arts, with musical direction from Mitra Sadeghpour, assistant professor of music, and choreography by Toni Poll-Sorensen, professor of dance. Senior Tera Kaminski, Waupaca, is assuming the role of stage manager, with junior Shane Chandler, Menomonie, as her assistant. Junior Abbie Williams, Roberts, is the assistant to the scenic and lighting designer Jim Pitroski. Senior Colin Wanke, St. Paul, Minn., is serving as props designer, and senior Erin Weaver, Eau Claire, is creating the make-up designs. Sound design is by Art Gulig.

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or (800) 949-UWEC, are $10 for the general public; $8 for those 62 and older; $7 for children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $6 for students with a university ID.
