UW-Eau Claire to Offer Two New MEPD Programs

RELEASED: Feb. 7, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — The College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education will begin two new Master of Education in Professional Development programs for fall 2006. One program is designed specifically for new teachers, the other for experienced educators.

The Initial Teacher Program (MEPD-ITP) allows new teachers to

  • begin during their first year of teaching.
  • earn credit toward their master's degree while writing their Professional Development Plans.
  • take courses designed to provide support — not overload.
  • receive support from faculty and classmates through online discussions.
  • connect theory to best classroom practices.
  • complete their MEPD and submit their PDP for re-licensure within four years.

The Professional Educator Program (MEPD-PEP) allows experienced teachers to

  • focus on best classroom practices and student outcomes.
  • learn with and from a cohort of peers.
  • receive on-going collaboration and support through online discussion.
  • attend class only one weekend per month.
  • earn their MEPD degree in two years.

Both programs are 30 credits and combine online and weekend formats convenient for working professionals. Educators can access UW-Eau Claire faculty who are leading experts in the field of Collaborative Leadership in Education and acquire the knowledge, skills and dispositions to become collaborative leaders in their schools.

"UW-Eau Claire has a long tradition of working closely with teachers in the surrounding area, professionals in the field," said Dr. Susan McIntyre, professor and chair of Curriculum and Instruction. "These two new flavors of graduate study provide excellent opportunities for new teachers, as well as more experienced teachers, to continue their professional development while earning their master's degrees."

Informational meetings are scheduled in Eau Claire from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 2, at Memorial High School Media Center, and 3:45 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, at Flynn Elementary School Media Center. In Neillsville, a meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, at the Neillsville School District Multi-Media Room. Additional meetings at various locations will be scheduled soon.
