UW-Eau Claire to Participate In National Survey
on Academic Integrity

RELEASED: Feb. 1, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will participate in a national survey on academic integrity being conducted through the Center for Academic Integrity at the Kenan Institute for Ethics, Duke University.

The mission of the CAI is to provide "a forum to identify, affirm, and promote the values of academic integrity among students, faculty, teachers and administrators."

Jodi Thesing-Ritter, associate dean of student development in the office of Student Development and Diversity, is leading the research team conducting the survey at UW-Eau Claire. The team includes Dr. Karen Welch, assistant professor of English; Dr. Susan Harrison, acting associate dean of student development; and student researchers Daniel Hardy, Eau Claire, Stephanie Birdd, Hillsboro, and Michelle Clark, Humbird.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for our campus to assess integrity in comparison to other campuses across the country," said Thesing-Ritter. "We are hopeful that the information gained from the study will assist us in promoting the highest standards of integrity for our students."

Those who participate in the study will be eligible for a prize drawing. Prizes are provided in part through funding from the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.

Information about the survey, which asks both faculty and students for their views on things like whether they believe there is a serious problem with cheating or plagiarism at their university, and whether policies for dealing with it are well publicized and enforced, will be distributed via e-mail on Feb. 1. The last day to complete the survey will be Feb. 15, and the prize drawing will take place on Feb. 20.

View the faculty survey and student survey online. Also find more information on the CAI Web site.

The UW-Eau Claire research study, which will include focus-groups, an environmental scan and individual interviews with faculty and students, is being funded by a Faculty/Student Collaborative Research Grant.
