EAU CLAIRE — A student nursing association at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has given $15,000 to endow a nursing scholarship through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence campaign.

The gift by the Eau Claire Student Nurses Association was motivated by the organization's desire to invest back in UW-Eau Claire nursing students and also by a matching gift challenge issued by the Casper Foundation to encourage giving to the UW-Eau Claire nursing program. As a result of the Casper Foundation challenge, the $15,000 gift from ECSNA will be doubled to $30,000.

The gift establishes the Eau Claire Student Nurses Association Scholarship, which will fund two UW-Eau Claire scholarships — one for nursing students with financial need and another to benefit nursing students interested in participating in an international study abroad program.

"We want to support current and future ECSNA members because they helped make possible the funds we were able to give to the Foundation," said Deborah Chopper, a senior nursing major and president of ECSNA. "We also want to encourage nursing students to participate in the study abroad program to help our members gain a broader insight of the world around them."

ECSNA, which has been active at UW-Eau Claire since 1976, provides student nurses the opportunity to develop leadership and professional skills. The organization generates funds through the Nursing Fair, which is held twice each year and membership dues.

The ECSNA gift is recognized as a contribution to Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's ongoing comprehensive campaign to benefit UW-Eau Claire's people and programs.

ECSNA is one of a handful of student organizations that have established scholarship funds through the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.

"ECSNA hopes that by a student organization stepping up to the plate and funding a new scholarship, it might create momentum for other people and organizations to create new scholarships or contribute to this one," Chopper said.
