Three Nursing Grads
Receive Statewide Awards

RELEASED: Dec. 8, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — Three nursing alumni from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire recently received prestigious awards from their professional state nurses associations.

The South Carolina League of Nurses honored Kathryn (Dorsey) Becker, a 1977 graduate, with the Award of Nursing Excellence.

Mary Campbell Bliss, a 1978 graduate, received California's Nursing Excellence Award.

Patricia Schlosser, a 1992 graduate, received the Wisconsin Nurses Association's 2006 Staff Nurse Advocacy Award.

"The fact that these three women have received recognition for their contributions to their patients and the profession is an indication of the strong professional preparation provided at UW-Eau Claire," said Dr. Elaine Wendt, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Becker, who has an MBA from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Penn., is associate chief nursing officer for the Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center in Greenville, S.C. She is responsible for GHS Memorial Hospital, which has 825 beds and outpatient services.

Bliss, who earned a master's in maternal-child nursing from UW-Madison, is a perinatal clinical nurse specialist for the Sutter Health-Sacramento Sierra Region in Sacramento, Calif. Throughout her career, she's worked with nursing and medical staff to promote evidence-based standards of care, develop programs and educate nurses. She is a pioneer in pushing domestic violence to be viewed as a health care issue in California. Earlier this year, the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association honored Bliss with the Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award.

Schlosser is a staff nurse in Medical Telemetry/Intermediate Care at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire. She received the award for demonstrating outstanding advocacy in a clinical setting at the staff nurse level. She currently serves on the WNA board of directors and was recently elected to the Congress on Nursing Practice and Economics of the American Nurses Association.
