Media Memo: Davies Center Redevelopment Project Approved by UW Regents

TO: News and Assignment Editors

FROM: Mike Rindo

DATE: Dec. 8, 2006

SUBJECT: Davies Center Redevelopment Project Approved by UW Regents

A student-initiated proposal to redevelop Davies University Center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire received approval today from the UW System Board of Regents.

Regents voted to add the Davies Center project to the UW System's 2007-09 capital budget request.

The up to $48.8 million project will be funded through student segregated fees. Under the proposal, the segregated fee increases would begin to be phased in for the 2007 fall term and reach a maximum of $125 per semester by 2010. Current segregated fees are about $600 per academic year. No tax dollars would be involved in the development or operation of the building.

The student center opened in 1959. A 1964 addition doubled its size, with additional expansion and updates made to the building in 1976, 1982 and 1991.

The project still must be approved by the State Building Commission, the legislature and governor for inclusion in the overall state budget. See related Dec. 5 news release.
