UW-Eau Claire Student Receives Scholarship
From Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society

RELEASED: Aug. 30, 2006

Rebecca FenclEAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire sophomore Rebecca Fencl, De Pere, has been awarded a $1,000 Undergraduate Grant Scholarship Award for the 2006-07 academic year from the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society.

Fencl, who is majoring in journalism with a minor in Spanish, just finished a term as secretary of the UW-Eau Claire chapter of Phi Eta Sigma in May. She is also a member of the Society of Participating Honor Students, a campus organization for sophomores in the upper 35 percent of their class.

This year Phi Eta Sigma granted $200,000 in endowed scholarships or awards to 109 outstanding members of Phi Eta Sigma for undergraduate or graduate study. Selection is based on academic records, participation in Phi Eta Sigma activities, applicants' statements, letters of recommendation, and campus and community activities.

Phi Eta Sigma is the oldest and largest honor society for first year college students in all academic disciplines. Its goal is to encourage and reward academic excellence among freshmen in institutions of higher learning. Those elected to membership have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale at the end of any first-year, full-time curricular period; carry a normal academic load acceptable toward a bachelor's degree; and rank in the upper 20 percent of their classes.

Phi Eta Sigma was founded at the University of Illinois in 1923; in 1937 it was voted membership into the Association of College Honor Societies. Currently, Phi Eta Sigma has more than three hundred chapters throughout the United States and more than 900,000 members.
