Annual Awards Established
In Memory of Jeff Oliphant, Ronald Satz

RELEASED: Aug. 23, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — The College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has established awards in memory of Jeff Oliphant, director of the athletic training program who died suddenly in August 2005, and Ronald Satz, provost and vice-chancellor emeritus, who died March 7 after a long struggle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Dean Katherine Rhoades said the awards honor the memory of the two men, who contributed so significantly to the college during their professional careers. The awards will include a cash award of $1,000 each and will be funded by the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.

“We are pleased to honor exceptional faculty, staff and students with awards that will memorialize the legacy of these two outstanding individuals,” Rhoades said.

The Jeff Oliphant Blugold Spirit Award will be given to a student, faculty or staff member who demonstrates enthusiastic participation in supporting the vision and mission of the university, college, department and/or professional program or major. The recipient must show success in collaborating with others, dedication to high standards in the profession, strong support of fellow students and/or colleagues, distinction and recognition in the person’s professional, field of study or field of expertise; and evidence of leadership skills that have helped make a difference in other’s lives.

The Ron Satz Teacher/Scholar Award will be given to a faculty member in the College of Education and Human Sciences who demonstrates dedication to student success; strong commitment to democratic ideals; excellence in scholarship and documented contributions that have extended the body of knowledge in their field; commitment to cultural diversity; and community, state, national and international participation in the field of expertise.

A committee with members from each department will select the recipients prior to the College of Education and Human Sciences’ Scholarship Recognition Event held in the spring where the awards will be presented.
