UW-Eau Claire Chapter of Mortar Board,
Gold Caps, Receives Silver Torch Award

RELEASED: Aug. 11, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 2005-06 Mortar Board Chapter, Gold Caps, received the National Silver Torch Award at the 2006 National Mortar Board Conference held July 28-30 in Columbus, Ohio. Gabrielle Siciliano, Peoria, Ariz., 2006-07 president of Mortar Board, accepted the award.

The award recognizes chapters that successfully meet all the chapter standards for the year. Only 40 Mortar Board chapters received this distinguished honor from more than 214 chapters nationwide. The UW-Eau Claire Chapter has received Torch Awards (silver or gold) three times in the past five years.

Last year's officers, responsible for earning the award, were president Cassandra Lawler, Mazomanie; vice president Michelle Clark, Watertown; treasurer Jennifer Warmke, Black River Falls; secretary Jamie Jones, Osceola; historian Erin Roberson, Watertown; director of communications Holly Patoka, Colgate; and alumni director Becky Bettin, Rochester, Minn. Bettin graduated in Dec. 2005, and Clark, Jones, Warmke and Patoka graduated in May 2006. Lawler and Roberson are seniors. Paula Stuettgen, senior coordinator of student development and programs in University Centers and Programs, is the group's adviser.

Gold Caps became a campus organization at UW-Eau Claire in 1970 and was granted a national charter by Mortar Board in 1976. The purpose of Gold Caps is to promote college loyalty, to advance the spirit of service and fellowship, to promote and maintain a high standard of scholarship, and to recognize and encourage leadership. Membership is based on service, scholarship and leadership and is open to students who are currently enrolled in their fifth full-time semester, whose cumulative grade point average is within the top 35 percent of the class, and who have demonstrated leadership abilities in service to the University and/or community.
