EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire junior Phuong Nguyen has been awarded a $1,000 Jo Anne J. Trow Scholarship for the 2006-07 academic year from the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society. Nguyen is from Hanoi, Vietnam, and is pursuing a double major in accounting and finance.

Each year, Alpha Lambda Delta awards 35 Jo Anne Trow scholarships to outstanding students across the nation. Selection is based on academic records, participation in Alpha Lambda Delta activities, campus and community activities, applicants' statements, and letters of recommendation. For the 2006 competition, the national committee reviewed more than 85 strong applicants submitted by more than 60 local chapters.

Nguyen just finished a term as president of the UW-Eau Claire chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta in May and also served as the Eau Claire delegate to the ALD national convention in Nashville, Tenn., last October. She is also a member of the Student Accounting Society and Beta Alpha Psi, the national honor society for accounting and finance. In addition, she has served as a volunteer in many capacities for the Center for International Education, participating in the International Folk Fair, International Speakers Bureau and various roundtable discussions, and as a peer guide for other international students during orientation.

Dr. Roger Selin, who Nguyen named as the faculty member who has most influenced her at UW-Eau Claire, described her as an ideal student — a hard worker with a positive attitude about education, UW-Eau Claire and the accounting major.

"Even though Phuong is just 18 years old, she has the mental and academic maturity of a much older student," said Selin.

After Nguyen graduates, she hopes to take the Certified Public Accountant exam and work for a large international public accounting firm.

"After a few years of business experience, I hope to be able to pursue higher education," said Nguyen. "I would like to pursue either a master of business administration degree or a law degree, but I'm not sure which one yet."

Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society that recognizes and encourages academic excellence among first year students. The society recognizes students who have attained a 3.5 or higher GPA in their first year or term of higher education. The Jo Anne J. Trow award was started in 1988 to honor a past National President of Alpha Lambda Delta.

UW-Eau Claire Alpha Lambda Delta chapter adviser Paula Stuettgen said the UW-Eau Claire chapter also received a Gold Award from national ALD headquarters in recognition of its 75 percent increase in membership this year and for outstanding chapter standards of service and scholarship.
