UW-Eau Claire to Offer
Entrepreneurial Training Series

RELEASED: Aug. 8, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — The UW-Eau Claire Small Business Development Center is now accepting applications for its fall Entrepreneurial Training Series, a 13-session series of seminars designed to help entrepreneurs learn the fundamentals of small business management.

"This series is designed for people who are serious about starting a business or are already in business but want some structured training, rather than moving ahead strictly on their own," said SBDC counselor Jim Mishefske. "It is intended for people who have little or no business experience or formal business training."

By the end of the series (or shortly thereafter), each participant should have completed a good draft of a business plan. Individualized counseling from the Small Business Development Center is available at no charge to all program participants as they work on their business plans during and following the series.

Classes will meet 6:30 to 9:15 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 19 through Dec. 19, with the exception of Thanksgiving week, at the Continuing Education Office, 210 Water St., Eau Claire.

The series schedule for fall 2006 is as follows:

  • Sept. 19 — Getting Ready to Start a Business
  • Sept. 26 — Developing Your Marketing Strategy
  • Oct. 3 — Do-It-Yourself Market Research
  • Oct. 10 — Advertising and Promotion
  • Oct. 17 — Legal Issues
  • Oct. 24 — Managing Employees
  • Oct. 31 — Insurance and Risk Management
  • Nov. 7 — Customer Service and Time Management
  • Nov. 14 — Writing Your Business Plan
  • Nov. 21 — Thanksgiving Break
  • Nov. 28 — Recordkeeping and Taxes
  • Dec. 5 — Financial Management
  • Dec. 12 — Financing the Business
  • Dec. 19 — Putting It All Together

The fee for the 13-week series is $1,000; however, participants only need to pay $250 at the start of the program. If the participant completes the program series and prepares a business plan, the Wisconsin Department of Commerce will pay the remaining $750. Tuition assistance also is available to qualified individuals who complete and submit an application to the Wisconsin Department of Commerce prior to beginning the series.

For more information about the Entrepreneurial Training Series or to receive a course description, contact Mishefske at the UW-Eau Claire Small Business Development Center, 715-836-5811.
