EAU CLAIRE — The Ekaterinburg Classical Trio, known to public radio listeners throughout Wisconsin as the Kat Trio, will close this season's Artists Series at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Wednesday, May 10. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of Haas Fine Arts Center.

The Kat Trio's performances are energetic and audience-friendly, featuring classical works, well-known inspirational songs and even American pop standards. The wide-ranging Artists Series program will include Aram Khachaturyan's Trio for violin, clarinet and piano as well as music by Brahms, Max Bruch, Chopin, Dvorak, Jerome Kern, Rachmaninoff, Peter Schickele, Shostakovich, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky and Henri Vieuxtemps.

The Ekaterinburg Classical Trio was born in the summer of 1998 in Ekaterinburg, Russia, when three graduates of the Ural State Conservatory decided to extend their friendship and music-making to a professional level. On the ensemble's 2006 concert tour of the United States, violinist Victoria Gorbich and clarinetist Vladislav Gorbich are joined by pianist Viatcheslav Ovchinnikov. The trio is touring through July as artists-in-residence with Wisconsin Public Radio and the Chazen Museum of Art, presenting formal and school concerts, master classes and live radio and TV performances.

Wisconsin Public Radio hosted the Kat Trio as artists-in-residence in 2004, a tour that included more than 300 concerts in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Chicago, Denver, Lincoln, Des Moines, Milwaukee, Madison (including a Sunday afternoon Live from the Elvehjem concert), and numerous smaller communities across the upper Midwest. As hosts of the trio's fifth American tour, WPR is partnering with the Artists Series in this Eau Claire concert.

A reception and opportunity to greet the artists as well as familiar WPR radio personalities will follow the performance in the Haas Fine Arts Center lobby.

Tickets are $15 for the public, $13 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, and $5 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students.

Tickets are available at the Service Center counter in the east lobby of Davies Center and also will be sold at the door. The Service Center is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call (715) 836-3727 — or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

The Artists Series is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin. Wisconsin Public Radio and Community Television have contributed generous promotional support. Best Western Trail Lodge Hotel & Suites (715-838-9989) at 3340 Mondovi Road is the exclusive accommodations partner for the Artists Series.

Funded by the students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the Artists Series is administered by the Activities and Programs office.
