UW-Eau Claire's Jazz I Ensemble to Perform Spring Concert May 4

RELEASED: April 26, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble I will present its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

Jazz I, under the direction of Robert Baca, professor of music, will begin the concert with "Donna Lee" by Charlie Parker. The ensemble will follow with Gordon Goodwin's "Under the Wire" and "Sky Blue" by Maria Schneider. The first set will conclude with Nester Tores' "Tigers Tail," featuring Tim Lane, professor of music, on flute.

For the second half of the concert, the ensemble will perform a tribute to the music of Hoagy Carmichael. This set will include solo performances by soprano Mitra Sadeghpour, assistant professor of music and theatre arts; pianist Michael Cunningham, professor of music; and baritone Robert Knight, professor of music and chairman of the department of music and theatre arts. Selected works by Carmichael include "Skylark," "The Nearness of You," "Heart and Soul" and "One Morning in May/I Get Along Without You Very Well." The concert will come to an end with Carmichael's "Stardust."

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or (800) 949-UWEC, are $5 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
