The "Women in the Outdoors" event is set for 8 a.m.-5p.m. in the Outdoor Recreation Center in Hilltop. It will help women learn skills in some outdoor activities, including fly fishing, sea kayaking, trap shooting, and map and compass reading. Senior psychologist emerita Katherine Schneider will read from her book, "To the Left of Inspiration: Adventures in Living with Disabilities," at 11:30 a.m. April 26 in The Cabin, Davies Center. Schneider, who's been blind since birth and a Seeing Eye dog user for 30 years, takes readers through her daily life — traveling, talking to children about disabilities, working and more. English Professor and Poet Bruce Taylor will receive the Major Achievement Award from the Council for Wisconsin Writers.
The award recognizes his contributions to the world of poetry, his dedication to nurturing students' talent, and his many state and national awards/fellowships. He established the NOTA student poetry readings, now 30 years old; published seven poetry anthologies; and discovered new poets. Taylor has been a member of the Literature Panel of the Wisconsin Arts Board and host of The Writer's Workshop: Wisconsin ETN. He's been a scholar and consultant for the Wisconsin Humanities Council, the Lila Wallace Foundation, the L.E. Phillips Library, the Annenberg/CPB Project and the Drexel University First Year Experience Program. He's won awards/ fellowships from the Wisconsin Arts Board, Fulbright-Hayes, National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities and Bush Arts Foundation. He will receive his award May 6 in Milwaukee.

Dana Milbank, a national political reporter for The Washington Post, will speak at the Ann Devroy Memorial Forum at 7:30 p.m. April 25 in Schofield Auditorium.
In addition to reporting, he writes the Post's "Washington Sketch," a column about political theater in the capital; writes the "Washington Week in Preview" for the Slate magazine; and appears on news programs. The Ann Devroy Memorial Forum and Devroy Memorial Fund recognize the work of 1970 graduate Ann Devroy, a journalist who died in 1997. A number of nursing faculty and students will share their research findings during the 21st annual Kaleidoscope of Nursing Scholarship April 28.
The daylong program provides opportunities for nurses to discuss ongoing and completed research. Carol Picard from the University of Massachusetts Amherst School of Nursing will give the keynote presentation, titled "Keeping the Passion in Compassion," at 9 a.m. in Davies Theater.
