Director of the National Institutes of Standards and Technology to Discuss NIST's Role in Enhancing the Nation's Technical Infrastructure

EAU CLAIRE — Dr. William Jeffrey, director of the National Institutes of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Md., will present a seminar May 5 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The seminar, titled "Measurements & Standards: A Critical Piece of the Nation's Technical Infrastructure," will begin at 3 p.m. in Room 007 of Phillips Science Hall. The seminar also will describe NIST's recently unveiled Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology and NIST's role in the American Competitiveness Initiative.

Jeffrey, a physicist by training, has been involved in federal science and technology programs and policy since 1988. Previous to his appointment as director of NIST, he served as senior director for homeland and national security and the assistant director for space and aeronautics at the Office of Science and Technology Policy within the Executive Office of the President. Prior to that, he was the deputy director for the Advanced Technology Office within the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Prior to joining DARPA, Jeffrey also held positions at the Defense Airborne Reconnaissance Office and the Institute for Defense Analyses.

Jeffrey received his Ph.D. in astronomy from Harvard University and his B.Sc. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The presentation will be part of UW-Eau Claire's chemistry department spring seminar program. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Jeffrey also visited UW-Eau Claire in May 2004. During that visit he outlined the role for science and technology in homeland and national security.
