UW-Eau Claire Senior Receives Award Recognizing Peer Education Contributions

RELEASED: April 20, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — One member of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Student Wellness Advocacy Team was recently recognized with an award at the Bacchus and Gamma Peer Education Network's Area 4 Conference.

Ashley Borman, a senior political science student from Kenosha, received the Outstanding Student Award. Borman is a peer health educator with the SWATeam at Student Health Service. This is the second consecutive year that a UW-Eau Claire student has received this award.

SWATeam consists of 10 peer health educators who facilitate educational programs on a variety of wellness topics, including alcohol education, sexual health, stress management and relaxation. It is housed in Student Health Services and coordinated by health educator Sarah Harvieux.

Borman said that the goal of the program is to make campus and its students safer and healthier. The group gives interactive programs in residence halls and classrooms. SWATeam also collaborates with other departments and student organizations to sponsor campus-wide events like National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week.

Harvieux said that Borman's accomplishments include a successful fundraising campaign and excellent communication and presentation skills.

Borman became interested in SWATeam after attending an event at UW-Parkside, where the peer educators had a booth set up in the student union.

"I was really curious if UW-Eau Claire had something like that," Borman said. "After looking, I found the SWATeam and was really excited for the job. My family is full of doctors and nurses so maybe I've just been made conscious of health and healthy living."

Borman said that one of the keys to the program is that Harvieux does a good job letting the university know that SWATeam is around. Everyone also works really hard, and they are flexible to program requests, Borman said.

Bacchus and Gamma is the largest national peer education organization, and Area 4 includes peer education programs from Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota and North and South Dakota.
