Media Memo: UW-Eau Claire Faculty, Students Help Plan Earth Day Celebration

TO: News, Assignment and Photo Editors

FROM: Judy Berthiaume

DATE: April 19, 2006

SUBJECT: UW-Eau Claire Faculty, Students Help Plan Earth Day Celebration

Faculty and student members of the UW-Eau Claire Conservationists, Student National Environmental Health Association, Environmental Public Health Program, the Biology Club, Student Life and Diversity Commission, and the Geography Club are among those organizing and participating in the Eau Claire Community Earth Day Celebration slated for 11 a.m.-6 p.m. April 22 at Owen Park.

This annual event, with an "Earth Day Is for Everyone" theme, will include food vendors, activity and educational booths, live music, arts and crafts, children's games and guest speakers.

Wisconsin's rich environmental legacy — reflected in the public service of Earth Day founder, former governor and congressman Gaylord Nelson — will be represented by UW-Eau Claire and Putnam Heights student groups, the Eau Claire City-County Health Department, the Sierra Club, Xcel Energy, Beaver Creek Reserve, local merchants and farmers, and even Smokey the Bear.

UW-Eau Claire faculty and students involved with the Eau Claire Community Earth Day Planning Committee include senior Patrick McRaith, representing the Conservationists, the Student Life and Diversity Commission, and the Geography Club; junior Anna Brady, representing the Biology Club; alumna Sara Schmidt from the Beaver Creek Reserve; Jim Phillips, associate professor of chemistry; and Crispin Pierce, assistant professor in public health professions and director of the Environmental Public Health program.

For more information about the university's involvement in the event, contact Crispin Pierce at (715) 836-5589 or piercech@uwec.edu, or Patrick McRaith at mcraitpj@uwec.edu.
